Week 1: Stepping Into the Moonwalk—The Rise of Jaafar Jackson

A Legacy Reborn: The Significance of Family

Welcome to the official start of my series: The Road to Michael! This week, we focus on the actor tasked with the greatest role in modern musical cinema: Jaafar Jackson.

Casting Michael’s own nephew is a testament to the care and respect the entire team has to ensuring his portrayal is handled with love and understanding. The Jackson family’s matriarch, Katherine, stated that Jaafar truly “embodies my son” and in a clip from 2024, Marlon stated that Jaafar isn’t imitating MJ, he “became” him.

It’s endorsements like these that can assure fans that the spirit of Michael will be honored on screen.

Jaafar’s Talent

While this is Jaafar’s feature film debut, he is no stranger to the spotlight or the stage. He began playing the piano at 12 and grew to develop his talents as a singer and a dancer. His dedication to his own craft in combination with growing up surrounded by the artistry of the Jackson family, under his father, Jermaine, created the structure for this moment.

Before landing the role as MJ, Jaafar had already launched his own career, releasing his debut single, “Got Me Singing,” in 2019. The video (racking up over 10 million views as of today, 11/26/2025) showcases his dance moves, charisma, and smooth vocals.

Producer Graham King summed up the decision perfectly, saying they conducted a worldwide search but were ultimately “blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael.”

The Look and the Moves

The first glimpses of Jaafar in the role have been nothing short of transformative. From the precise recreation of the iconic red “Thriller” jacket and skeletal makeup to the seamless execution of complex choreography, the level of dedication is evident.

Reports from the set—and the first-look photos that went viral—show Jaafar is meticulously recreating Michael’s signature moves. Director Antoine Fuqua describes his performance as “uncanny,” noting that it feels like “Michael’s spirit comes through in a magical way.”

This level of dedication is crucial. Dance and choreography is not only a cornerstone of Michael’s career it’s a major component of his life with Michael in his book Dancing the Dream writing “The faster I twirl, the more I am still inside. My dance is all motion without, all silence within.” Jaafar is embracing the immense responsibility of embodying a performer whose stage presence is still studied and revered globally, ensuring that the visual spectacle of his uncle’s music is perfectly preserved for a new generation.

Carrying the Torch

Jaafar’s journey is a beautiful but heavy responsibility. This movie is more than playing a role; he is carrying the torch for one of the greatest performing dynasties the world has ever known.

Join us next week as The Road to Michael continues, shifting our focus from the star to the mastermind behind the lens!
